In recent years, SNK has partnered with Hamster Corporation to bring many of the classic NEOGEO games to modern gaming platforms through the ACA NEOGEO series. The original NEOGEO games' challenging gameplay and unique aesthetics can now be experienced on smartphones with customizable screen settings. In the latest installment of The King of Fighters (KOF), teams now consist of four members, unlike the three-character teams in previous games. Before each match, players select three characters to fight with, while the fourth member acts as a Striker. The Striker can be summoned during battles to assist with special moves against opponents. The number of times a Striker can be summoned in a match is limited and is indicated by "Strike Bombs" at the bottom of the screen.

The Advanced and Extra combat styles from The King of Fighters '98 have been removed. The game now features a single combat style inspired by the Advanced mode, where players fill their power gauge by attacking opponents or performing special actions. Players can choose between two enhanced states during battles, depending on the button combination used.

Counter Mode enhances the player's offensive capabilities, allowing unlimited use of Super Special Moves. Players can also perform a "Super Cancellation Attack" or a "Moving Attack" to transition from a Special Move to a Super Special Move within a combo. Armor Mode, the other enhanced state, increases the character's defense, enabling them to withstand more damage, but Super Special Moves cannot be used in this mode.

After a match, players receive a score based on their performance. Achieving a high score rewards players with an extra battle following the final boss in arcade mode. The updated version, The King of Fighters: Evolution, includes three new stages and two new characters, available exclusively as Strikers.

New Strikers include Kyo Kusanagi (in alternate attire), Athena Asamiya (in her school uniform), Goro Daimon, Billy Kane, Ryuji Yamazaki, Chizuru Kagura, Syo Kirishima, Alfred Airhawk, Vanessa, Seth, Fiolina Germi, and Gai Tendo. The game is also compatible with the Neo Geo Pocket Color game, The King of Fighters: Battle de Paradise. Points earned in Battle de Paradise can be transferred to The King of Fighters '99: Evolution to expedite leveling up Extra Strikers.
