The gameplay of METAL SLUG 2 doesn't boast many standout features, as the developers have preserved the classic style with numerous levels ranging from easy to challenging. Players must conquer each level by defeating all adversaries to progress through the game. Additionally, players can select their desired difficulty level and replay it in Mission mode. This mode offers unlimited levels for players to enjoy or to tackle a specific difficulty level perfectly. The difficulty level system remains consistent with the previous version, providing players with a familiar experience.

In earlier versions, players would control a character solo to navigate through the game's challenging levels. This could become monotonous for veteran players seeking novelty. To address this, the developer introduced two additional characters, Eri and Fio, to assist the player. Eri is a skilled and accomplished former agent who has completed numerous challenging missions and is a reliable ally for the main character. Fio, hailing from a military family, fights like a true warrior and enhances your ability to vanquish enemies.

The game's design remains unchanged, with 2D graphics continuing to be utilized. However, the effects of some new weapons are intricately detailed. The battlefield becomes more dynamic with these new weapons, heightening player excitement. The sound is the most notable enhancement in this version, featuring more details than METAL SLUG X. The audio is well-balanced and clearer compared to previous versions.
